Dance Soc’s Volunteering and Fundraising Efforts

Dance Soc’s Adopted Charity for 2015/2016 is The Snowdrop Project. Snowdrop work to empower the survivors of human trafficking to live lives no longer defined by their past.
Find out more about the charity here

Dance Soc will fundraise for Snowdrop all year round. Last year Dance Soc raised over £1000 for charity and this year we hope to raise even more! Join our team of volunteers to get involved and see what we do first-hand, or come along to one of our fundraising events and help us make even more of a difference to the lives of these women.

Throughout the year Dance Soc members volunteer to provide weekly dance classes for the women Snowdrop work with. The classes are relaxed, welcoming and full of fun and laughter! We’ve had brilliant feedback from Snowdrop and the women we teach: ‘You bring wonderful energy and fun with you and it has such a profound impact on the women… I am inspired and motivated by your passion. Thank you for inspiring them’ says Lara, the director of The Snowdrop Project.

Our dance classes are held every Friday during term time 4:30-5:30 and we are continuously recruiting volunteers to help us teach one of these classes. Please get in touch if you want to be involved by emailing dance@sheffield.ac.uk 🙂

This year Dance Soc are also fundraising for Snowdrop in many new and exciting ways!

We are putting together a Dance-Themed Charity Calendar to sell in aid of Snowdrop. We will be photographing any willing, smiling faces around Sheffield in fabulous costumes during semester 1. If you want to get involved, and anyone and everyone is welcome to, then please get in contact letting us know what styles of dance you want to model for! Sales of the Charity Calendar will start in November and will make wonderful Christmas presents for family members and fellow dance lovers so keep an eye out!

DANCE SOC CHALLENGES YOU TO PLAY TWISTER! A fundraising event with a Twist will be happening on Wednesday December 2nd… That’s all we can say so far but imagine a Twister playlist, Twister prizes, Twister cocktails and of course taking on the university’s most flexible students in the ultimate challenge of Twister all in the name of charity. Save the date!

Dance Soc will be getting together to take part in our uni’s RAG Spider Walk this November! All the money dancers raise for their midnight hike will go towards Snowdrop! Why not put on your hat and gloves and join us? More info to follow.

Dance Soc are also fundraising for other worthwhile causes this semester, including taking part in the BBC Children in Need Tapathon 2015. The Tapathon is a national event which aims to set the world record for the number of tap dancers performing the same dance at the same time (the record currently stands at 7,596 people). This year’s Tapathon routine is professionally choreographed to Up Town Funk, one of Dance Soc’s favourite tunes last year! It is taking place on Sunday 15th November, the application deadline has already passed but if you want to come and support us in the SU then please do!

In March 2016 Dance Soc will be collaborating with Dance Sport to put on a Tea Dance for Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind. We need tap dancers to help us put on an entertaining performance for the clients during the day and volunteers who are happy to take part in the ballroom workshops too! More info to follow!
